Derby County 1-1 Preston North End – Match Review

Tom Barkhuizen cancelled out Matej Vydra’s goal to snatch a late point for Preston, preventing Derby successive league wins for the first time since January.

Derby had the better of the first half and created a couple of good chances through Vydra who first headed over before hitting a left footed strike into the crowd. The visitors managed only one shot in the opening forty five, this came after a Paul Gallagher cross found the head of Jordan Hugill who’s effort floated wide of the post.

The Rams’ dominance soon prevailed early in the second half. After the ball was intercepted by Butterfield on the half way line, Bradley Johnson played a brilliant through ball to David Nugent who’s shot deflected into the path of Matej Vydra who finished past Preston keeper Chris Maxwell. The goal was Vydra’s first since October as he started consecutive games for the first time in five months.

After making a few substitutions, with fifteen minutes to go the Rams began to sit back in an attempt to hold on to their lead. In the final of the five additional minutes, a long ball by Preston keeper Maxwell was knocked down by Simon Makienok before falling to Tom Barkhuizen who’s shot trickled under Scott Carson and into the net. The late equaliser was Barkhuizen’s second goal in as many games and his seventh of the season, five of which came in League Two for Morecambe.

The draw prevented Derby from successive wins for the first time since December. Preston remain one point above the Rams who are ten points off the top six with ten matches remaining. Next up for Derby, on Friday night, is second placed Brighton at the AMEX Stadium in a match televised live on Sky Sports.
