Derby County have made their first summer signing, bringing in experienced centre half Curtis Davies from Championship rivals Hull City on a two year deal.
The Championship season ended a month ago today, and after a busy few weeks, Derby boss Gary Rowett has made his first signing at the club. Curtis Davies, who is 32, was signed this morning after a successful medical which took place yesterday afternoon at Moor Farm. He joins the Rams from newly-relegated Hull City; the Daily Mirror have reported the fee as being just £500,000, as Derby paid the relegation buy-out clause in Davies’ contract.
Davies spent four years at Hull, making 144 appearances, scoring seven goals, however, after featuring only four times in the final 16 games of the season, it was only a matter of time before a club such as Derby would come calling. He is a player with great Championship pedigree having won promotion with Hull in the 2015-16 season via the Play-offs, adding to this, he has also captained all six clubs at which he has played during his 13 years as a professional. With Derby potentially looking for a new captain, could Curtis Davies be the assigned ‘skipper’ going into Gary Rowett’s first full campaign at Pride Park?
So far this summer, Derby have been linked with a number of players, the majority of these being defenders. Davies epitomises what Gary Rowett appears to be doing this transfer window, with his main qualities being his leadership, physicality and experience. Other names mentioned appear to have these same attributes, such as former Rams loanee Andre Wisdom and Newcastle defender Grant Hanley. Though Derby had the sixth best defensive record in the Championship last season, it’s been clear for a while that changes have been needed defensively, with some hugely lacklustre displays from the current back four in recent years. It seems that the Rams will first be tackling their defensive problems before addressing the issues faced in attacking areas.
In terms of exits from the club, though as of yet no offers have been received, a number of players could be on their way out of Derby. UK newspaper The Mirror, claim that Abdoul Camara, Darren Bent, Nick Blackman and Tom Ince will leave this summer, with the latter being linked to Newcastle as the Rams look to raise funds for potential incomings. Another player linked with a move away from Derby is right back Cyrus Christie, who is apparently being tracked by a number of clubs after an interview this week in which he spoke as if he may leave Derby this summer. Christie also left Twitter this week after fans were angered by comments the Ireland international made in the same interview, with the Irish Sun.
The signing of Curtis Davies is a clear showing of intent from Derby County as they look to enhance the chances of promotion being on the horizon this term. It is likely that at least three or four more players will join the club this summer along with a number of departures.
