Derby County are on course to make their second signing of the summer window after agreeing a fee with Liverpool and personal terms with defender Andre Wisdom. The deal should be completed when Wisdom returns from holiday for a medical examination later this month.
After speculation of a potential deal over the last month, Andre Wisdom is set to join Derby from Liverpool in a deal believed to be worth an initial £2 million, rising as high as £4.5 million. Wisdom, who turned 24 last month can play either as a centre back or as a right back and is Gary Rowett’s second summer signing after Curtis Davies joined Derby 10 days ago. The defender has played for Derby before on a youth loan in the 2013-14 season, during which he was utilised as a full back, making 38 appearances, including the full ninety minutes at Wembley in the heart-breaking Play-Off Final defeat to QPR.
After joining Liverpool from Bradford as a youngster in 2008, Wisdom made his first appearance for the Reds in 2012 against BSC Young Boys in the Europe League, scoring from right back in a 5-3 win. Since then he has made only 21 more appearances for Liverpool, with his latest being in 2014. Once the deal is completed, it will be the first permanent move in Wisdom’s professional career having been loaned four times, playing 98 times for four different clubs whilst on loan. His most recent loan deal saw a move to Austria where he played for Red Bull Salzburg, making 24 appearances, mainly at centre back as he helped his side to the league and cup double.
In the days proceeding Wisdom’s move to Derby, a number of the Rams’ players were linked with moves away from the club. According to The Sun, Sheffield Wednesday are after captain Richard Keogh, with the possibility of a £3 million bid being launched. Another who may leave Derby is full back Cyrus Christie who is believed to be available for around £2 million after seemingly being replaced by Andre Wisdom. Talisman Tom Ince remains a target for a number of clubs with the Rams reportedly rejecting a £7.2 million bid from Premier League new boys Huddersfield this week. Derby are apparently looking for more than £10 million for Ince who scored 15 goals last season, making him Derby’s top scorer. Finally, Will Hughes is also the subject of Premier League interest with Brighton and Watford though to be circling around the 22 year old midfielder.
Adding to the already signed Curtis Davies, Andre Wisdom along with Chris Martin, George Thorne and Craig Forsyth, is likely to be a brilliant addition to the Derby side as they continue to shape up for a promotion challenge in the new season.
